  • Architecture of Doom

    Architecture of Doom

An absorbing and chilling documentary about the National Socialist aesthetic, and how attempts to create the Aryan Ideal caused the extermination of millions.

Aspects covered include: Hitler’s epiphany while viewing Wagner’s opera ‘Rienzi’, the rise of the homo-erotic Grecian/Nordic ideal, the parallels drawn between the ‘degenerate’ art of the cubists and dadaists and the mentally ill/physically deformed, the Nazi obsession with purity and cleanliness, and, finally, the descent of the Jewish people to the level of a virus/vermin.

Released 13 October, 1989. Director: Peter Cohen. TV documentary.

This is a superlative documentary, which deftly lays out the Nazi aesthetic, and ties it to their worldview and crimes as they sought to remake the world in their ideal image.

The makes of this documentary also made: “Homo Sapiens 1900″ about the history of the eugenics movement.

    • Deep Reflection

I like this sort of old-fashioned documentary. It is an essay by one person, a personal view, presented and offered thoughtfully to evoke a thoughtful response. I listen to these documentaries through headphones to avoid disturbing others in the room. Listening over headphones I could hear the in-breaths of the presenter and it was like he was in the room, puffing on a pipe, and commentating on the images passing before our eyes. This is intimate. It is like a conversation with an old uncle or a one-to-one tutorial with an excellent teacher. All the more horrifying to have this intimate, deeply humane, and deeply cultured presentation and for it to deal with a topic of dehumanisation and murder. This documentary is deeply affecting and very thought-provoking especially for anyone who is a medical doctor, an artist in any medium, or an architect.
