  • Beautiful Equations

    Beautiful Equations

Artist and writer Matt Collings takes the plunge into an alien world of equations. He asks top scientists to help him understand five of the most famous equations in science, talks to Stephen Hawking about his equation for black holes and comes face to face with a particle of anti-matter.

Along the way he discovers why Newton was right about those falling apples and how to make sense of E=mc2. As he gets to grips with these equations he wonders whether the concept of artistic beauty has any relevance to the world of physics.

Released 2 January, 2012. 60 min. TV documentary.

I am tired of seeing comments on physics documentaries saying “too simplistic”. IT’S A DOCUMENTARY, i.e. aimed at the LAYMAN, not a frickin lecture series. What did you expect? The notion of beauty in equations can be summed up as the notion of simplicity in equations, so why not expect a rather simple documentary? This isn’t meant to be extremely informative (unless you know nothing of physics/math) it’s simply meant to be enjoyable, perhaps a bit educational along the way. The same goes for the Brian Cox lecture that DS posted not long ago.

This was great, by the way. I loved it. I FOR ONE am a guy who is VERY interested in theoretical physics, but who is not good at math. Most physicists learn to understand math, THEN they learn to understand physics and its weird concepts VIA mathematics. Me, on the other hand, never was good at math but was always interested in mind-bending topics such as the nonlocality of electrons and the relative nature of time. These are easy concepts for me to understand, despite not knowing the math which accompanies them, whereas most physicists would need math to “explain” it for them.

Thus, a documentary which talks about only the math and less about the concepts themselves, is refreshing and welcome, in my eyes. I have seen literally EVERY FRICKIN DOCUMENTARY OUT THERE (that i can find) about cosmology, astronomy, physics, quantum mechanics, etc. and most of them are all pretty much the same, imo. “How Long is a Piece of String” was an especially unique, good one. This one, too, is very unique, and thus in my eyes, good. I loved it. Thanks again, DocuStorm.

This documentary was way too simplistic.
Nothing beautiful about something that should be called “equations for dummies”
