Class Dismissed

Based on the forthcoming book by Pepi Leistyna, Class Dismissed navigates the steady stream of narrow working class representations from American television’s beginnings to today’s sitcoms, reality shows, police dramas, and daytime talk shows.

Featuring interviews with media analysts and cultural historians, this documentary examines the patterns inherent in TV’s disturbing depictions of working class people as either clowns or social deviants — stereotypical portrayals that reinforce the myth of meritocracy.

Class Dismissed breaks important new ground in exploring the ways in which race, gender, and sexuality intersect with class, offering a more complex reading of television’s often one-dimensional representations. The video also links television portrayals to negative cultural attitudes and public policies that directly affect the lives of working class people.

I see someone mentioned ‘hyperbole’. Even if this was the case -and it is not-the offering here as against 8 decades of PR-and Mass Media tricks-is emakably restrained..
The insideous media would have -and evidently largely succeeded in ‘doping’ their target audience on everything from ‘Leave it to Beaver ;the Cosby show; and indeed the supossedly hip lib Jon Stewert show–never mind Martha…or Oprah-actually Orpah(didn’t she do well-girl).

Here in Ireland -and our neighbour east -the UK-derivative drivel, much worse-placates -the target audience. Note the word -target-in media speak.

We have an Irish Presidential election now October 2011-with 7 of the least desirabel characters-less than magnificent -appearing nihtly amid the adverts-seeking office. If they spoke the truth-we’ll say -like ” politicians of all hues are acquisitive-and the media lackies will try to fool ya-but if you vote for me-I’ll tell it like it is.
The salary is hyper-and ought not be greater than the most powerful leaders of the known Universe-and I will forfeit many expenses of pomp and circumstance”
If they said just that-they would get their ‘audience share’. They would get elected.
They don’t . In the meantime, the media circus fills the advertising gaps !

Leave the media—-Rise/ Speak against abuse of power.

excuse the misprints and overwritten ‘rant’ Essentially I meant to say “surely the audience will soon see through and rise against the sheer hypocrisy of the media-and political class.
