  • Genius of Photography Episode 1

    Genius of Photography

    Fixing the Shadows

In the most comprehensive look at the most influential art form in the world, the series explores every aspect of photography – from daguerreotype to digital, portraits to photo-journalism, art to advertising; in the UK, America, China, Japan, Africa and beyond. It includes interviews and encounters with some of the world’s greatest living photographers including William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, William Klein, Martin Parr, Sally Mann, Robert Adams, Juergen Teller, Andreas Gursky, Jeff Wall and many others.

But as well as telling the stories behind the world’s greatest photographs and the photographers who took them, the series examines the ‘genius’ of photography itself, this magical, unpredictable and democratic medium that has transformed the way we see ourselves and our world.

This episode asks what is a photograph worth these days? The current record for a single image is $2.9m. From America to China to Africa, we examine how the business of being a photographer has been changed by the art market’s sudden interest in what was once its poor relation.

Snap Judgements also looks at the impact of the digital post-production techniques that make anything possible.

This is a small segment of the documentary. You can still watch the full documentary through Veoh.

        Hi,

I’ve moved this documentary series to the Documentary Trailer category, and left a link to the full documentary with each episode. I’ll look around for friendlier video hosts meanwhile. Thanks.

First three episodes were viewable then the last episodes required download of Veoh (?) software. Not willing to veoh so missed out. The three episodes I saw were very enjoyable. Felt the first episode was the most inspirational. After that it was all about American photography (with very few non-USA photographers even mentioned let alone interviewed/their work shown). American photography gets very dull after a while. A lot of the claims made about ‘photography’ I think were really only relevant to ‘American photography’. So this was frustrating. Otherwise, cool. Thanks for showing this series.

Hey Snap, I’ve switched all episodes to better quality (and removed Veoh entirely) – I hope it will give you a better viewing experience.
