Genocide: Worse Than War

Best-selling historian and son of a Holocaust survivor, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen has been investigating genocide for over 30 years. He has spent most of his life dispelling the many myths that cloud the judgment of generally sensible people, and that keeps them for doing something to prevent this horrific crime.

In this PBS documentary, Goldhagen takes you on an extraordinary journey of deep insight and analysis. Listen as he interviews those that have been touched by genocide including survivers, perpetrators, witnesses, politicians, diplomats, historians, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists, all with the purpose of explaining and understanding the causes and effects of genocide.

In the last 100 years there have been over 100 million innocent victims of genocide. This is much more than the amount of casualties of all the wars all over the world in the same period of time. Genocides happen in every corner of the world and to every type of people. The Turks murdered over 1 million Armenians during World War I. During the 1930s and 1940s Japanese murdered millions across Asia. Over 8 million died in the Soviet Gulag Camps. Germans exterminated over 6 million Jews during World War II. The Chinese Communists killed about 30 million, and in the 1970s over 1.7 million Cambodians were murdered. Then there are the millions who were slaughtered in Bosnia, Rwanda, Congo, and Darfur.

Based only on these numbers, genocide and mass-slaughter are the worst problems plaguing humanity today, and people need to understand that absolutely nothing is inevitable about it. It boils down to a series of choices: leaders choose to initiate the killing, ordinary people choose to participate, and those with the power to make it stop choose to do nothing.

WORSE THAN WAR documents Goldhagen’s travels, studies, and interviews in nine countries around the world. He brings viewers along on an unprecedented and thought-provoking journey.

Unfortunately, between the facts and information this documentary delivers, it is just a manifest of opinion. The Author says that “military intervention” is easy, and “military intervention” can give quick results in preventing genocide. And that is right, it is possible, that it could do that. But what if it fails? We must never forget that military intervention is only an encoded term for war.

While I praise Daniel Goldhagan for his commitment to ending genocide, there is a naivety in his solutions. The U.N is helpless because as a functioning body, it has 5 members that have veto’s. (get to decide when and where to intervene, discounting the other 190 votes) Furthermore, creating another organization bypassing the U.N to make strategic military strikes against those who are coordinating genocide, is a contradiction if you cannot correctly identify who is actually ‘terrorizing’ the soon to be vanquished. I found it quite interesting how Daniel can point a finger at a leader in Guatemala in need of military or judicial intervention, yet somehow ignores the genocide sanctioned by the U.S in Syria, Iraq, and explain to me who is in a position to intervene militarily against them. (The U.S does not recognize the world courts) As with all things, righteousness is based upon a set of rules that applies to everyone, without exception. This only occurs when personal bias is removed!
It is still a good documentary to watch, and worth checking out; as long as you keep true objectivity.

ONCE AGAIN YOU HAVE IGNORED ONE OF THE WORST GENOCIDES OF ALL TIMES–THE EXPULSION OF
AT LEAST 15 MILLION ETHNIC GERMANS FROM THEIR ANCIENT HOMELANDS IN EASTERN AND SOUTHERN EUROPE. A MINIMUM OF SOME 3 MILLION GERMANS LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THIS GENOCIDE DUE TO WINTER WEATHER, VIOLENCE (MURDER AND RAPE) AND DISEASE. THE GENOCIDE OF THE GERMANS INVOLVED WAS DUE TO CRIMINAL, IMMORAL AND IRRATIONAL REVENGE FOR WHICH THE INNOCENTS WERE MADE TO SUFFER.
