His reign was a legendary frenzy of lunacy, murder and lust. While Rome cowered in terror Caligula killed for the sheer fun of it. Between executions he staged spectacular orgies, made love to his own sister, and declared himself a living god.
We still shudder at the unspeakable deeds of Rome’s mad emperor, but Caligula may have been driven insane by a lunatic world. Murderer, pervert, loving father, devoted son all of these were Caligula. Beyond his ghastly legend lies an anguished life that was even more bizarre.
