Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita

Stem Cell Research is arguably the most important research being done today that will pave the way for finding a cure for human’s weaknesses. Cancer, AIDS, degenerative diseases, etc.  In 2001, Dr Jack Kessler witnessed a terrible tragedy to his family.  This is the story of stem cell research – and Dr. Kessler. At the same time that he became the chair of Northwestern University’s Neurology dept, his daughter, 15 years of age, suffered a ski trip that resulted in paralysis. Dr. Kessler immediately shifted his research from finding a cure for diabetes to finding a cure with stem cell research for spinal cord injuries. However, then- President George W. Bush decided to veto a bill for special funding for stem cell research. The battle began.

I was somewhat baffled at this documentary. One of the main messages seemed to be that those who want stem cell research are caring people while those against stem cell research are uncaring people.
Another view strongly expressed is that those who are against stem cell research are ignorant in the same way that ‘flat-earthers’ were (and still would be) ignorant.
Another argument is on a personal level – getting close to the two sufferers and seeing how creative and brave they are in this documentary should make us want them to get better – but, once again, those against stem cell research have no heart.
We are also allowed to see the hard work and frustrations of the young researchers. Again, presumably, to tug at our heart strings – as, indeed it did mine, though I was quite uneasy about the use of the word ‘sacrifice’ instead of ‘kill’, as if the mice are contributers to this noble cause.
There was an attempt to bring to us, to have us witness the human cost of banning the use of stem cells.
It did not influence my feelings in any way, and I perceive the documentary as quite unscientific.
