  • Norway Massacre: The Killer’s Mind

    Norway Massacre: The Killer’s Mind

The 2011 Norway attacks were two sequential terrorist attacks against the government, the civilian population and a summer camp in Norway on 22 July 2011.

The first was a car bomb explosion in Oslo within Regjeringskvartalet, the executive government quarter of Norway, at 15:25:22 (CEST). The car bomb was placed outside the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and other government buildings. The explosion killed eight people and wounded several others, with more than 10 people critically injured.

The second attack occurred less than two hours later at a summer camp on the island of Utøya in Tyrifjorden, Buskerud. The camp was organized by AUF, the youth division of the ruling Norwegian Labour Party (AP). A gunman disguised as a policeman opened fire at the participants, killing 69 attendees, including personal friends of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and the stepbrother of Norway’s crown princess Mette-Marit.

The Norwegian Police Service arrested Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian right-wing extremist for the mass shootings on Utøya and subsequently charged him with both attacks. The European Union, NATO and several countries around the world expressed their support for Norway and condemned the attacks.

Released in Aug, 2011. 41 min. TV documentary.

This doc doesn’t actually analyse the mind of the killer in any depth. We are left pretty much none the wiser about the psychopathology (if any). There is speculation about a possible personality disorder (narcissistic) but that does not explain why any personality disorder expressed itself with ‘spree killing’. If we are to prevent further events like this then we need to understand what caused this massacre and this documentary does not help in that aim.

Documentaries about crimes often present themselves (e.g. in their titles) as analytical and as furthering understanding of forensic psychology. The reality is almost always a documentary that wallows in recounting the nature of the criminal acts. Doing so provides a vicarious thrill for those who like such things (and if you do like such things you should go see a therapist before your sadism gets out of hand). I do not like to wallow in the sordid details of crime. I do not need to hear (again) about the massacre. A documentary about the killer’s ‘mind’ should make that its focus and investigate in detail, in depth, and report the main principles of the debate about what the state of mind of the killer was (is) and what might have caused this and what can be done to prevent another event of this kind. We needed less footage of the crime and more intelligent interviews with the ‘talking heads’ who are presented in this doc only through ‘sound bites’ giving their comments and opinions without context or any elaboration or challenge so that the implication of what they say cannot be fully understood and evaluated. This superficial approach to such a serious subject is a sort of disinformation, a perverted kind of entertainment. What a pity. I think the murdered people have a right to a more responsible reaction to their deaths than this ‘tabloid’ reportage.

It’s disturbing how Breivik would use murder as a tool to convey his message. To massacre innocent people in the name of all he believes in, becoming a martyr in his own twisted right-wing universe. Absolutely horrible.

I wish you all the best Norway.
