  • Readings From The Slave Narratives

    Readings From The Slave Narratives

Ed Bell and Thomas Lennon directed first-person accounts of the lives of those born into slavery in the United States, narrated by famous film voices.

Narratives told by those who were born into slavery are related in Ed Bell’s and Thomas Lennon’s excellent documentary by such celebrities as Oprah Winfrey, Ossie Davis, Don Cheadle, Samuel Jackson, Ruby Dee, Angela Bassett, and others. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the film allows each performer to bring their own touch to the retelling of the slave’s story; all bring their talent as well.

When the project to preserve slave memories was begun, many of the former slaves feared speaking to the white man and avoided the project. But some were glad to tell their stories for posterity, as many were nearing the end of their time on earth. In this one last gift, they contributed to a land that was harsh and brutal to them, contributing once again as they had contributed by the toil of their bodies and the sacrifice of their spirits, keeping this important legacy alive for posterity.

This is a small segment of the documentary. We’re still looking for the full documentary.
