  • Science Under Attack

    Science Under Attack

Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse examines why science appears to be under attack, and why public trust in key scientific theories has been eroded – from the theory that man-made climate change is warming our planet, to the safety of GM food, or that HIV causes AIDS.

He interviews scientists and campaigners from both sides of the climate change debate, and travels to New York to meet Tony, who has HIV but doesn’t believe that that the virus is responsible for AIDS.

This is a passionate defence of the importance of scientific evidence and the power of experiment, and a look at what scientists themselves need to do to earn trust in controversial areas of science in the 21st century.

Broadcast January 24, 2011 on BBC. From the on-going Horizon series.

I as well am even more convinced that this upcoming disaster is created by these so called climate scientists. A bunch of hooey. Funny it all comes from the UK. The country that 50-60 years ago almost killed everyone with their pollution. Write a story, get in the news, job security. Trust he says. Ha!

I don’t see why they even bothered bringing up agriculture. He didn’t even go into depth about the public being against messing with the genes of food. They didn’t answer if the manipulated gene is stable during digestion and absorption into our system – they also kinda made the people against it seem ignorant which i didn’t like- , or go into whether it is right to copy right food (or corporate Greed for that matter) when ever they please. Everything was gravy till he got to agriculture. They should have left it out if they were not going in depth.

    • Alex Schamenek

All in all a decent documentary but it left out how science is often manipulated by corporate greed and politics. Instead it pled the case that science is always at odds with the media, politics, and ideologies. This is often true, but that doesn’t negate the fact that science is quite easily manipulated, especially when money is concerned. So presenting this documentary without the warning that it can be manipulated is misleading, and perhaps dangerous. Maybe Sir Paul Nurse is unaware of the manipulations on science. Maybe he’s innocent. Let’s assume so. If that’s the case, consider my warning. Don’t believe everything scientists tell you, especially when they have financial backing by large multinational corporations like Monsanto.

Thanks but no thanks, I’d rather trust a respected scientist than some kook on the internet.

        • Bruce

Aren’t we all kooks on the internet these days :-)

Farmers plant GM modified seeds because they are forced to. Watch The World According to Monsanto.

GM foods are dangerous. They spread like a weed and destroy diversity. And since Monsanto patents them, if they end up on your property, you can be sued.

Plus they use a dangerous process to splice the genes and that has not been shown to be safe to life.

And science has no interest in long term study before it forces this dangerous technology on the entire world.

Now that was not in the least bit biased.

Excuse the sarcasm. If I was concerned about the validity of climate change science before, I am convinced its bogus now.

People are concerned about GM crops because it has genes in it?? What did he do?? Go to a school for the intellectually challenged and ask that question?

I sense some bias in your comment

Facts are the only thing that matters

        You have none

        • Durey

So funny. You have no idea what I have.

Even high school students know that genes mutate without assistance, when the mutation is unsuccessful (does not enhance the survival chances of the organism) the change does not take hold, when it is successful it does. When we interfere with natural selection at the genetic level, we cannot truly predict what the outcomes of that interference will be.

Why are so many farmers in India committing suicide over Monsanto’s round up ready soy. It does not bind nitrogen to the soil like natural soy does, eliminating one the most important functions of soy in farming, and making their fields infertile. These guys are going broke and cannot face their families’ descent into poverty. Just one in a litany of environmental and other catastrophes due to genetically modified crops.

Wiki leaks have revealed that the US has bullied the EU into allowing Monsanto’s and other GM seeds here. Why has the EU resisted so long if it is safe. Why does it take bullying and threats to get the EU to lift its ban.

          Lots of questions, no answers.
