  • Secrets of the Tribe

    Secrets of the Tribe

The field of anthropology goes under the magnifying glass in a fiery investigation of the seminal research on Yanomami Indians, also known as the ‘Fierce People’.

In the 1960s and 70s, a steady stream of anthropologists filed into the Amazon Basin to observe this ‘virgin’ society untouched by modern life. Thirty years later, the events surrounding this infiltration have become a scandalous tale of academic ethics and infighting.

Released 10 Jan, 2011. 90 min. Director: Jose Padilha. Documentary film.

    This is a preview.

interesting documentary, but wrong to claim that the yanomami are somehow an example of the ideal primitive society, and that they can be a model for how our ancestors lived. while this may be a tempting hypothesis, it relies on evolutionary logic, and implies that Western ‘civilisation’ is the most evolved society and that tribes such as the yanomami are somehow less advanced. for those who may be tempted to agree with this, it contains the implication that societies like the yanomami have remained the same for thousands of years – that they have not undergone any social change – this is uncorroborated, as all we know is how they live now, and is an inherently patronising attitude to groups like yanomami.

because i am anthropoligist my self who went to filed work (althoy not on such exsotic places) can say that this documnetrau shoced me in many ways. First of all ,antropologist are usualy people who are anti talents for money.to see that much finaced expedition is very new to me.
I think that the acusationt for infection to the vileges is too harsh, they will be infecet soner or latter.
But i cant expres enaf my feleing of anger when i say that discrese of a man- Lizot a PEDOFILE who created ORGANIZED HOMOSEKSUAL PROSTITUTION in so caled virgin peoples for incredebel period of time!!! why he is not persecuted by the venecualan authtorities?!!

a miserebal man who descrese our profesion!!
for not reacting to that such horibal stuf i do acuse Chagnon and the so caled “misionares” there.

This is a really interesting documentary. It’s a new topic for me – and so I don’t have much reference to use whilst watching. But it seemed to me that the bloke who wrote the original book subtitled ‘the fierce people’ was strongly supported by verbal accounts by members of the tribe.

The author of this book states that 40% of all the men had committed homicide and that they had 3 times more children than men who hadn’t committed homicide. He states that all the fights were about women – a claim backed up by an older tribe member.

Really interesting – if this does indeed reflect the sort of society that all us humans might have evolved from – sharing ancestors with similar drives. Not wars started by territory or resources – but mating rights.

Hooray! What an awesome documentary! I admired and sympathised with Chagnon. The others guys either seemed to have produced no valuable work of their own, (having, no doubt, found it easier to channel their ambition into pure bitching), or (Lizot) simply made me shudder. But, whatever, just hooray.
