The Boy Who Can Never Grow Old

Imagine gradually losing the ability to use your muscles. You’re born a healthy baby, but by the time you’re a teenager you need 24-hour carers to do everything for you. Imagine knowing that the condition would eventually lead to your early death. What would you do?

This intimate uplifting film follows 19-year-old Stuart Wickison who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, as he prepares to leave the comforts of Treloar’s, his special needs college, to study and live independently at university. Although Stuart is nearing death, the film follows him as he pushes himself beyond his limits, to achieve his dreams.

Released in 2007. 46 min. Director: John Joe Bardsley. TV documentary.

Stewart’s story made me numb for a while…regarding the fact how i am wasting my life and pushing it toward death, where life itself is so scarce and unfortunate most deserved minds are missing one..
He must be a strong guy, he did fight life through his medical expert’s deadline of 20 years.. Unfortunately he died at 23 years, not because of disease, but by driving electric chair in lake..
Unfortunately…lot’s of unfortunately for stewart…really inspiring to say, if ever i could use a bit of that inspiration too…Stewart highlight me how i am such a waste.. But indeed very inspirational..

I know this is strange, but I could careless… I am so jealous of his nails. ^_^ They’re so perfect to me and I wish to have mines look like his… long and strong.

Onwards with the video… his life story is so inspiring. Like the what the commenter before had stated there are people who end their lives so rapidly, yet they aren’t even going through a quarter of the struggle and hardship of life like this young man is.

As for sex… the fact that he will have such a short life span is the reason why women wouldn’t give him the time or day… unless they’re looking for a one night stand as well. I’m a realist… I wouldn’t give a guy with this disease the time or day, especially knowing he’ll dye tomorrow. After all, the main point of having sex is to procreate, bring forth more life and passing ones genetic make-up… something to which modern society has forgotten or doesn’t want knowledge that is what sex is for. It wouldn’t make any biological sense to to reproduce with a male who wouldn’t be around to help raise a child. It would be such a waste really to reproduce with a mate who wouldn’t be around to help lessen the load of raising a defenseless being. The mother will be left to raise that child on her own thus that child wouldn’t receive the same opportunities or best quality of life as a child who has more support (I.E. another parent/adult to help out or lessen the stress of raising a child). It’s rather selfish of him to want to experience sex yet not wanting to think over the consequences to which it brings… in other words contemplate the question “What happens if this result bringing forth a baby? What if this child also has what I have?” Typical man really. Loves the act of sex but doesn’t think over nor wants to think over its end result… which is to create life. >_> I can understand living ones life to the fullest and all but there is also about taking responsibly for those actions… that is what it is to be a full mature adult. Unfortunately, western modern society is all about selfish needs and let someone else deal with the consequence which is truly immature and childish. He is truly a teen and not a man for thinking in such a matter… lacking the sense of understanding the implications of what sex results in. Again I’m a realist and those whom were offended by my words need to grow up because what I just stated is the truth.

Anyways like with all disabilities… the worse thing one can ever do to a person/individual with disabilities is to isolate that person/individual or to deliberately treat them differently. The fact that his parents, upon finding out their son has this disease, refuse to treat his differently may have been the key factor to his strong will and determination to continue on with life and go on living to achieve his own personal goals and achievements. It is his parents support and upbringing that helped him to move on mentally, even though his body doesn’t want to move at all. This works with any syndrome/disease/disorder/disability. :)

      What an amazing documentary.

I feel so strongly for this guy, who has been robbed of life basically. He seems so incredibly mentally strong and he is just such a likeable person, who I would love to have among my friends, with or without the illness.

He has to live his entire adult life, in a few years, and I really whish for him to make it through uni, and get some of the same life experience that most of us get.

As a man in my twenties i felt my heart ripped out when i heard Stuart explain how he would like to try the ultimate pleasure, to have sex. I think it is something no one should have to be denied. It is a really big part of life to miss out on.
And then he has to deal with all the hostipals and 24/7 medical support, and almost no time to do what he really wants.

Stuart is such a fighter. I’ve seen other documentaries with people who are better of than Stuart, turn to assisted suicide, because life is not worth living. Stuart just takes it as it comes, and he will try to make the most out of it. I think it is incredibly admireable, and shows the true nature a good and intelligent person.
