    The Civil War

    Episode 1: The Cause

    (1861)

Beginning with a searing indictment of slavery, this first episode dramatically evokes the causes of the war, from the Cotton Kingdom of the South to the northern abolitionists who opposed it. Here are the burning questions of Union and States’ rights, John Brown at Harper’s Ferry, the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the firing on Fort Sumter and the jubilant rush to arms on both sides.
Along the way the series’ major figures are introduced: Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant and a host of lesser-known but equally vivid characters. The episode comes to a climax with the disastrous Union defeat at Manassas, Virginia, where both sides now learn it is to be a very long war.

“Between 1861 and 1865 Americans made war on each other and killed each other in great numbers. If only to become the kind of country that could no longer conceive of how that was possible”
History has shown this statement to be perversely true. They just decided to redirect their efforts towards the international community (Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan etc etc etc….)

It is an American documentary done in America for PBS, which is an American channel network. What do you expect them to call it?

Deceptive and confusing title & description.

This is about the Amercian Civil War: there have been many civil wars.

It is a sad tendency the so many US writers, producers and webmasters to ignore the rest of the world. Such insularitry is a significant reason for the US is so despised. (BTW .. don’t condem me or what I am saying .. I am just noting the reality, and I am not claiming it is correct to condem one country.)
