Unfortunately, these types of communities have blurred the distinction between Halacha (Torah laws) and Machmir (strictness above and beyond the law). That is why living this way can be a very unpleasant experience and many people don’t look very happy. Judaism is supposed to be a joyful way of life, in loving service of G-d and humankind.

My mother’s family were ‘strict Jews’ but broke from the community. My mother raised her children as atheists. I became religious as an adult (a Christian). I often wonder what my Jewish roots were like and this gives me a peek into a world I could never know. In some ways I wish I could reconnect with being Jewish and in others I can see I would feel suffocated too — but I don’t think I would ever become a drug trafficker. This guy has issues with his family that need talking out with a therapist and then he needs to take responsibility for his immoral behaviour… he has a long road (and so do his family). But then we all have long roads. I guess we should pray for each other and support each other the best we can. I liked the lady who did the interviews, she seemed very sympathetic. Thank you for a fascinating documentary.

I take the shame on behalf of all Jewish people. Wait… That would mean I am the new Messiah? :-))) Seriously, those people should be bent from being Jewish. I would take his kippa off if I was there.
