The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years.

This documentary follows the assault on the record by Steve Wiebe, an earnest teacher from Washington who took up the game while unemployed.

The top scores are monitored by a cadre of players and fans associated with Walter Day, an Iowan who runs Funspot, an annual tournament.

Wiebe breaks Mitchell’s record in public at Funspot, and Mitchell promptly mails a video tape of himself setting a new record. So Wiebe travels to Florida hoping Mitchell will face him for the 2007 Guinness World Records. Will the mind-game-playing Mitchell engage; who will end up holding the record?

I can’t believe how small the world they live in is, very fun and alternative subject though. And Mitchel is just a manipulating ass, give Steve his rightfull place as the best donkey kong player!

    Awesome documentary.

    Atta boy Steve.

This documentary showed Billy Mitchell in his true form: a fool and a phony from start to finish.

I can’t believe it. A real life good guy actually coming out on top.

    Thanks for the great documentary.

Why is Steve’s taped score crapped on, while this Billy Mitchell’s taped score is accepted as legit?

Steve should be proud of himself, by being the bigger and better man by going in time and time again and showing them that he could actually do what he said he could do when no one would give him the respect for what he had acheived. That Muletted pretentious sociopathic shut-in is just a whiny little ***** whose only claim to fame is a 1980′s video game score and someting he hasn’t been able to climb above or “better” in his own life… and what was with that little kiss a** Kuh Kid, running around doing Billy’s dirty work for him?

Documentaries are supposed to engage the viewer… this one did exactly what it is supposed to do by making me actually and physically despise certain types of people!

    Way to go Steve!

Billy Mitchell is, quite clearly, a hypocrite and a coward.

I look forward to the day that Kenny Loggins look-alike is dethroned and consigned to the dustbin of gaming history.

That Billy guy is one arrogant dude. And with no legitimate claim in life other than being good at some silly, outdated game from eons ago. Give me a break! If he actually did something for the world I could almost accept his attitude.

    Great doc tho, very entertaining!

That Billy Mitchell guy is a self-aggrandising tool. So maybe 500 people worldwide care about Donkey Kong scores, there’s no need to spend your time stage-managing your ‘career’ as a gamer.
Oh, and deliberately standing in your opponent’s view and wandering around showing off your hot wife when he’s trying to concentrate is poor sportsmanship.
