  • The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter

    The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell’s Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one.

The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger’s attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened.

Released in 1970. 91 min. Directors: Albert and David Maysles. Documentary film.

If I can recall viewing this documentary 3 weeks ago; the impression I got was this-

That there must be some truth in the saying that the poor and impoverished -and some not so poor and courageous- went to fight in a war-while the rich kids hid and played . That the war was unjust and worse-is no reflection on the brave folk who chose to do ‘their duty’ or had no choice.

Conversely, or contrarily, on the home front-in the US OF A- remaining ‘males’ smoked dope and hoped to get laid-and do nothing except aspire to be a rock musician. I wonder -was GW Bush there too-on leave from fighting the VC , down in the jungles of Crawford Texas?

Well not many can be the iconic Mick J-and fair play to him. I suspect he is not as dissolute as he would have people believe.

The audience then and now-self indulgent daddy girls and mommy boys as evident in this Gimme Shelter -bought easily and gladly into the ‘rock n roll swindle’ for escapist -or more to the point- avoidance reasons. Just because Richard Milhouse Nixon is ensconced at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is no excuse really, for a never ending open air squat

At Altamont, Mick and TRS-made a fatal error; and I hope made some reperation to the dead person or persons. I hope.

The tragedy of lost lives at Altamont-were said to be a turning point-by muso or cultural scribes who believe the world revolves around such things–the ‘fluzzy’ ephemera

There are many turning points in a year-never mind a decade. In ’69-events not solely at Altamont , or for that matter at the Tate and LaBianca households-but rolling on from another cruel Vietnam massacre-after the previous year’s cover up of RFK and MLKing’s assasination, or state killing, ….brought the false idea of endless ‘escapism’ to an inevitable conclusion.

I was 14 in 1969-neither a hippy nor a rocker. 33 years later-during one of five stateside road trips-I passed by Altamont -driving from Manteca to San Fran airport-via Tracy—I wondered at a sea of Wind Mills-in the undulating green hills to my right. My companion said–”oh that’s Altamont”.

No sound. No screams -whatever about getting satisfaction. Just the whirr and whirling of a summer morning in 2002
