The Six Wives of Henry VIII

    Episode 1

Through dramatic reconstructions and his own passionate narration, Dr David Starkey, the controversial Tudor historian, profiles the six women who married Henry Vlll

The series begins with the story of Catherine of Aragon, a remarkable woman whose refusal to accept a divorce in defiance of Henry VIII’s wishes changed the course of English history.

Catherine was brought to England in 1501 as a teenager for the royal wedding of the century. She was to marry the Tudor heir, the prince Arthur. But after just six months Arthur died suddenly. Then in 1509 she married the new King Henry VIII. She was the perfect royal wife; beautiful, intelligent, and capable of ruling in Henry’s absence. But she could not give Henry the son that he craved.

Released in 2001. Presenter: David Starkey. TV documentary series.
