  • Why We Fall in Love

    Why We Fall in Love

When do you know if you fancy someone? What does love do to your brain chemicals, and is falling in love just nature’s way to keep our species alive?

We call it love. It feels like love. But the most exhilarating of all human emotions is probably nature’s beautiful way of keeping the human species alive and reproducing. With an irresistible cocktail of chemicals, our brain entices us to fall in love. We believe we’re choosing a partner. But we may merely be the happy victims of nature’s lovely plan.

Love has 3 stages, as described by Helen Fisher of Rutgers University in the States: Lust, attraction and attachment. Each stage might be driven by different hormones and chemicals.

    Stage 1: Lust

This is the first stage of love and is driven by the sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen – in both men and women.

    Stage 2: Attraction

This is the amazing time when you are truly love-struck and can think of little else. Scientists think that three main neurotransmitters are involved in this stage; adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin.

    Stage 3: Attachment

Attachment is the bond that keeps couples together long enough for them to have and raise children. Scientists think there might be two major hormones involved in this feeling of attachment; oxytocin and vasopressin.

LMAO! This documentary had just called men dumb, primitive, agressive beasts in less than the first 8 mins into the first video. XD Sorry I found that pretty hilarious.

Even with that said, I still believe my man is linguistically better speaker than I am. LOL I am more physically expressive than he is… ie physically aggressive. I guess this is why we are so attractive to one another. We balance each other. Imagine if you will if the two people in the relationship are bashful, shy, submissive beings. I don’t think the relationship would last that long. There is always a need for one of the partners to speak up and fight, whether its out in the Amazon jungle or in the concrete jungles of a so-called advanced society. I’m more likely to fight for justice and what is right, whether its convenient or not. It’s about following and defending moral principles.

This documentary is also wrong about body types. I clearly have a more masculine type body to what my culture deems as feminine, yet my body had attracted a male mate. Just as I was attracted to my man even though his body type isn’t deemed as masculine in the cultural or biological ideal of masculinity (he has rounder features, more feminine).

The symmetrical features ideas is bull. I am very asymmetrical yet I’ve been with the same man for eight yrs. Clearly I give out great orgasms and I am beautiful enough to keep him close by. >_> Maybe my child-like young features attracted him more than whether or not I am symmetrical. There is also the attractiveness on intelligence. Maybe my in-depth conversation on Social Studies and Science topics attracted his attention. I know I’m more attractive towards men who make great conversationalists. In other words, he has to be more mentally stimulating than physically. After all the biggest sexual organ is the brain.

As for the status theory, that is bull too. :/ I went with a man who is poorer than I am. I live in a house, he lives in an apartment. What attracted me towards him is his wit and personality, not his status. >_> I want an intelligent, nurturing male whom I know will be there to help raise a child and will not risk dooming his genetic future.

Truly this documentary is entertaining but it is off. :/ What I think is this… People will be attracted to whatever they don’t have, since it will add to the diversity of the genetic make-up into their children. This is why I am attracted to my mans’ softer features and he is attracted to my harder features. I’m attracted to his darker skin tone and hair, as he is attracted to my lighter skin tone and hair. This genetic variation will mean a brood of stronger children who will be more protected against birth defects and diseases. Racial theorists who believe in Eugenics will view our kids as defects and inferior, but on a biological level our kids will be stronger and healthier than the so-called pure race babies.

So, what about intellectual or divinely inspired love?
e.g.(1) Finding someone remotely via phone, pen pal or networks; realizing someone’s value w/out face-to-face and loving them for who they are intellectually by character, even falling in love.
e.g. (2) Love brought about via faith and spiritual devotion to God (etc.)
These are considered forms of True Love and may inspire feelings more powerful than sex can. Are these chemical as well? Have millions died for theit faith through history merely because of dopamine reaction?
Can scientists answer this or do they leave it to spiritual leaders (who have had answers for millenium.)

Very well said. I was going to ask those same questions too.

I would also add to the list of questions… do these chemicals also play role in people who are attracted to people because of financial reason? Not always about looks, odors and body shapes. What about those who fall in love with the same sex? And what are the biological reasons for being a homosexual? What about people who fall in love with other species or inanimated objects? Clearly these programs about love and sex are culturally and heterosexually bias, and they try so hard to simplify everything. Sometimes things can’t be explained.
